A Room of Requirement

Did you ever wish that in your home, you had a room of requirement - like at Hogwarts, a room that would change to meet your exact needs at any given moment? Or maybe even several of them?

Steven and I were discussing this last night, and here were a few of the ideas we came up with that we would like to have:

1. A children's playroom. This would include sound-proof walls (except maybe if someone were in serious pain and needed help...) and an ever changing supply of appropriate toys and activities the children could do.  Any toys removed from this room would be automatically sucked back into it as soon as a child was done playing with it. This room would ideally never be seen by parents' eyes.
1b. An offshoot of this room could be a Lego room, and would include a building table, bins for the different kinds of Legos, and a coinstar type sorter that you could dump assorted Legos in, and it would automatically sort them into their proper bins. Occasionally, the floor might be swept and whatever Legos might be found on the floor would be picked up and sorted back into their bins.
2. A theater room. This would also have sound-proof walls. It would have a large screen (3-D when needed), comfortable seating (in whatever quantity necessary at any given time), surround-sound, a large supply of interesting and appropriate movies, and maybe even a popcorn machine in the corner.
3. A craft room. At times this could be a sewing room, complete with sewing table, ironing board, and a healthy supply of fabric and notions, and even a quilting frame when needed. Other times it could be a painting room with an easel, paints, good ventilation and natural lighting.  It might even be a cozy room with good lighting and a big comfy chair with music or movies for entertainment, and a large supply of yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and pattern and idea books.
4. A wood shop. This would include a supply of wood in whatever size was needed, as well as whatever power tools or other equipment might be necessary for any given project.
5. A cat room. This room would contain cat perches, scratching pads, cat toys, always fresh food and water, and a self-cleaning litter-box.  When necessary, cats could be "locked in" to this room overnight with sound proof walls.
6. A private office. This would be a quiet place to go to make phone calls, work on the computer, or do other tasks that require peace and quiet, preferably without other people watching over the shoulder. The computer, printer, scanner and other equipment would always function properly, and would have installed any software that could be wanted.
7. An expandable kitchen. Need to prepare a feast for Thanksgiving or kitchen? Having twenty extra people over for dinner? With this room, there are always enough ovens available. There is plenty of  counter space, and the mixer and blender never break down. The dirty dishes are washed automatically and returned to their proper cupboards and drawers. The refrigerator and pantry are well stocked with everything that you might need.
7b. The dining room. Connected to the kitchen, this room is always perfectly decorated for whatever occasion, there are always the perfect number of chairs and matching dishes at the table.
8. A library. The walls of this room would be covered with good books of every subject and genre. There would be plenty of comfy chairs and good lighting. Maybe even a fireplace for atmosphere.

If you had a room of requirement in your house, what would you want it to be? A photo studio? A bowling alley? An atrium or greenhouse?

  1. oh, I want one... that would be so great. Instead of a lego room, my kids would need a train room. With tons of trains, and tracks with bridges and all the other things that make playing with trains so much fun for two small boys. I think I would like a 'nap room' for DJ. Somewhere where I could send him during quiet time. It would need to have a bed just in case he actually decided to take a nap, and it would need to be able to turn movies on for him, so I wouldn't have to go do that for him every half hour. Enough books and toys to keep him entertained without needing me to help him with something every five minutes. And there wouldn't be other things in there that he could get into or hurt himself or other things. Pretty much just a room that I could send him into for two hours a day that I wouldn't need to supervise him in and he would be begging to come out the whole time.
I asked Dean what he would do with a room of requirement, and he said he would turn it into a holodeck. Then it occurred to us that a holodeck is exactly what we would need. We may not be able to have magic, but someday, a room with holograms that you can turn into anything you want, is exactly what we need... now if only someone would develop that technology.

    1. A holodeck would work.... Now who is going to invent one?

  2. My room of requirement would be a kitchen where the dishes are done automatically, the floor is cleaned after every snack and meal.. and there is the machine where you order a meal and its done for you automatically. And if the kids don't want to eat the same thing they can eat a meal just for themselves. The machine of course would only prepare meals with proper portions and that had a balanced variety of veggies, protien, etc. so that the kids could have their burger or pizza but also be given carrots and such so they stayed healthy. And the Pantry would be fully stocked as well so we could make sweets or cook for ourselves when we want to.

  3. Definitely a photo studio with lots of natural light, props, backgrounds, and all the camera equipment that i would need for that photo. :) Scott would probably like a sports room, with a huge football field, or basketball court, or golf course depending on what he wanted to play. :)
