Happy Mother's Day

(I know Mothers Day was yesterday, but this post has been simmering for a few days and yesterday ended up being too busy for me to sit down and get out everything my heart wanted to say.)

Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers of children young and old, all over the world. To the ones who read their children bedtime stories, and the ones who stay up late waiting for their teenagers to come home. To the ones who let their adult children move back in when they have no where else to go. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who are grieving the loss of a child, due to miscarriage, genetic disorder, illness, accident, suicide, murder, war, or act of terrorism. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to those who are missing a child, due to disappearance, kidnapping, running away, loss of custody, prison, or just plain lack of communication. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who are grieving the death of their own mother, from illness, accident, or old age. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who have not yet had children, from lack of finding a suitable companion, from ill health, from infertility, from lack of opportunity. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the new mothers who watch the face of their sleeping newborn and wonder if she will be everything that baby needs for her to be. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers of children they didn't bear - those who have adopted, foster mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, neighbors, teachers, mentors. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who wake for multiple midnight feedings, who potty train, who use listening ears and gentle hands. To those who wash laundry and cook and clean, and also those who don't. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who were abused by their own mothers - whether physically or verbally, who choose not to pass that on to their own children. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the single mothers who work to support their family monetarily, physically, emotionally, and spiritually - without a husband's help. Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who are overwhelmed - who hear the tributes to wonderful women on Mother's Day and feel inadequate in the face of everything a mother is supposed to be. Happy Mother's Day.

My mother.
Happy Mother's Day to my own mother, an example of patience and love, understanding and forgiveness. She taught me to work. She taught me to love. She taught me to pray. Mother, I love you. Happy Mother's Day.
