Valentine's Day

Last night Steven and I went to the Boulder Dinner Theater to see "Singin' in the Rain". We had a blast. Last year, we went to a tiny theater in Denver to see "As You Like It". The cast of only six people performed multiple roles each, which was fine until they got to the last wedding scene when everyone was supposed to be on stage at once, and the two girls were switching wigs on stage. Anyway, we realized that we really enjoy watching plays together, and so decided to make it a Valentines Day tradition.

We arrived at the Boulder Dinner Theater around 6:30 and were directed to seats at a table set for four. We found out that another couple had the other seats, so we were prepared to share the table with complete strangers. We ate our salads and bread, and eventually another couple showed up. They sat down, were served their salads, and then - without even touching the salads, they stood up and left. At first I thought they were making a phone call or something, but they didn't return. We received our main dishes (I got chicken cordon bleu and Steven got beef stew with a giant puffed pastry thing on top.) We had finished our dinners and were waiting for the show to begin when an older couple asked if they could join us at the table. They introduced themselves as Jean and Judy, and told us that they had found out from the staff that the people who had reserved those seats had left, and changed their reservation for another night. This couple were very friendly, and very knowledgeable about the theater and performers. They appeared to know the servers, and even had a knowledge about how long the actors had been at the theater. We found out later they were the executive producers!

The play itself was very enjoyable. If you've seen the movie, then you have a pretty good idea of what happened. The highlight of the evening came just before the intermission, with the performance of the title song, "Singin' in the Rain". It began with a crack of thunder. Those sitting in the front rows had been issued rain ponchos before the show begun, and the thunder was the signal that it was time for them to put those on. A set was rolled onto the stage that featured the front of a house, with the door, window, and a drain pipe, from which poured real water. Below was the side walk and street, cleverly designed with its own gutter to catch the majority of the water. From overhead, rain began falling from pipes on the ceiling, and it was raining on stage. The lead guy walked his girlfriend home, and then started to sing and dance in the rain. He looked like he was having a blast, flinging water off his umbrella, kicking water in all directions, just like in the movie. I think those in the front rows of the audience were grateful for their ponchos. We were seated back a little ways and on a balcony, and we got some droplets on our table and on my sleeve. After the song finished, it took the entire 20 minute intermission (during which we ate our dessert) for them to dry off the stage completely!

It was a very enjoyable evening. I loved spending time with my sweetheart and celebrating the 12th anniversary of our first kiss.
