Last Day of School

It is the last day of school! No more seminary. No more homework. No more uniforms. No more tests. No more concerts.  At least for a few months, anyway.

Joshua and Mrs. Overton
Yesterday morning as we were preparing to leave for school, Josh told me, "Oh yeah, the awards celebration is this morning at 8:00! I was supposed to make you an invitation, but I was doing MAPS testing and forgot." Luckily, I didn't have anywhere else to be that morning, so I got to attend Joshua's Celebration for 5th grade. The celebration was held in an engineering lab that had been decorated with streamers and balloons. They started off the program by showing a slideshow of pictures taken through the school year. Then they had some student presentations followed by the handing out of awards. What I liked best about this celebration were the many different cheers that the two fifth grade teachers had the parents and students do for the students being recognized. They had a different cheer for everything! It was a lot of fun to participate in. Joshua received several awards, including high honor roll, a couple math awards, and a "Passionate Presenter Award", for improving his presentation skills. It is hard to believe that Joshua will be in middle school next year. Where has the time gone?

This morning I had Joshua do some of the cheers for me so I could show you:

John at the award ceremony
This morning as we were preparing to leave for school, it was John's turn to mention that the awards ceremony for 7th grade was being held in less than an hour. This time, I remembered to grab a camera as we headed out the door to go to school. While the students gathered in the courtyard preparing to go inside, I took pictures of Josh and Peter with their teachers. Then I checked in at the office and headed for the gym for John's ceremony. This ceremony began with the 7th grade band performing. Then came the presentation of awards. John achieved high honor roll, along with outstanding attendance, and awards for exemplary performance in Science and Engineering as well as a "Top Mathematician" award. Near me on the stands was a group of 7th graders, and I overheard them mention "Hiatt" when John's name was called for the math award. There didn't seem to be any surprise to them that he would get such an award. After the awards were presented, they showed a slide show, the band played another song, and then we were dismissed. In just a few more hours, those kids would be considered 8th graders, with just one more year until high school.

Peter and Mrs Hill
Peter's class is having a party today, in which he will get to eat treats, play games, and watch "Charlotte's Web". (They've been reading the book as a class.) His art teacher posted a link to a slide show showing artwork that Peter's class has done for various teachers around the school. Peter's art appears in the last two slides of the presentation.

Hannah, being in high school, has been wrapped up more in finals than parties, poor girl. Last night, she was working to finish up a paper she was writing about Romeo and Juliet. But in a couple hours she will be done, and her summer will begin.
