Easter 2010

Hannah holding the eggs she decorated

Easter. It has its own traditions, food, and fun. Friday night we covered the table in newspaper, filled cups with boiling water, vinegar and food coloring and set out 18 hard boiled eggs. The fun followed. Peter had fun telling me which cup to put his eggs in... and they were dipped in one cup after another until they had been in every cup almost, and were a mottled purplish color. Joshua also enjoyed moving his eggs from one cup to another. John created a bunny rabbit complete with pipe cleaner ears, but was devastated when it cracked. Hannah probably spent the most time on her eggs, dipping them in multiple colors bit by bit resulting in stripes.

Sunday morning the kids awoke, and waited impatiently for their parents to wake and let them at the eggs hidden in the living room. Several of the eggs were in the middle of the floor, apparently batted there by the cats. Still, there were several well hidden for the kids to search out.

Breakfast was cinnamon rolls and sausages. Then we enjoyed watching General Conference from the comfort of our own home. The kids drew pictures while they snacked on candy from their eggs while Steven and I took notes, and I knitted. Between sessions of Conference Josh took a nap on my bed... probably tired from having woken up so early.

Following the afternoon session of Conference we prepared our dinner. The menu included ham, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, crescent rolls, salad and broccoli. While we were preparing, Peter mentioned that he wanted Jesus to come to dinner. Hmmmm. I thought, "If the Jews can lay an extra place for Elijah at Passover, then I suppose we can lay an extra place for Jesus at Easter." So I did. I think this may become a tradition, because it helped us remember the reason for the holiday, and behavior at the table was definitely improved.
While we ate, we had a good discussion about the talks that were shared in Conference, and the real reasons why we celebrate Easter (and it has NOTHING to do with an Easter bunny!). Later on we enjoyed a pumpkin pie that Steven had made. (Actually, Steven made most of our dinner. I made the salad, broccoli, drink, and set the table.)

It was a great Easter Sunday!
