Cub Scout Day Camp

A couple weeks ago, (June 9-11) Peter had cub scout day camp. It was put on by our stake, and most of it was held at out stake center. The theme was "Journey to the Promised Land" and each of the groups had a name that was associated with one of the pioneer companies that came west. Peter was in the Willie company. (As in the Willie and Martin Handcart companies) Activities they did included making American Indian style headbands and decorating tepees. Some of the groups made dream catchers and tom toms and learned Indian dances. It sounded like they had a lot of fun!

Here, Peter and his group are decorating their tepee. Each boy took a wedge shaped section to work on. They drew their images in pencil, and then painted them.

The finished tepee, with Peter's section facing. He decided to draw one of the stories he was told during the camp. In his own words:

"It's Ephraim Hanks walking. It is snowing. He prays for a buffalo. He kills the buffalo. He moves and sees another buffalo. He kills the other buffalo. He gives the buffalo meat and hides to the people in the Martin Company, who were starving and freezing."

The last evening of the day camp, families were invited to come for activities and dinner. The tepees were displayed to represent an Indian village. The activities included panning for gold, shooting bows and arrows, throwing tomahawks, sling shots and watching the Bears do an Indian Dance.  The dinner was watermelon, fry bread with honey, and Navajo rice with real buffalo meat and venison. (The event was supposed to be held outdoors, but was moved into the gym due to inclement weather.)
