A Trip to the Emergency Room

I dislocated my shoulder last night. We were playing wiffle ball in the yard in front of the house for Family Home Evening. Steven was pitching. The kids took turns batting and running bases and I was chasing after the balls.  One moment I was running after a ball and the next the sidewalk was coming at me in slow motion but at a crazy angle. Then I felt the horrid jarring in my shoulder. Steven was at my side in a second but all I could say was, "Ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch!" The game came to abrupt halt as we all went inside - the kids to eat the oatmeal craisin white chocolate chip cookies I had made for dessert, and Steven to sit next to me on the couch while I held an ice pack to my shoulder and cried while I waited for the horrible pain to ebb. Only it didn't. When I finally acknowledged that I needed medical help, Steven helped me to the car and we went to an Urgent Care clinic in the neighborhood. We went in and stood at the admissions counter for long minu

Steven's Talk

“The Dispensations of the Gospel” Talk given in sacrament meeting March 8, 2015 Dispensations Today I would like to speak about the dispensations of the gospel. Now, to start with, we first need to understand what we mean by the term “dispensation.” A dispensation is a period of time in earth’s history when God has at least one authorized servant on earth who holds the priesthood. We can distinguish one dispensation from another in that in each new dispensation the gospel is revealed anew, so that people in that dispensation do not need to rely solely on what has been revealed in previous dispensations. Perhaps an easy way to think of it is that a dispensation is a time when God ‘dispenses’ the gospel. Throughout history there have been a number of dispensations, and each dispensation has had a specific purpose, as well as certain lessons that we can benefit from today. Past Dispensations Let us start at the beginning, with the dispensation of Adam. Adam was the first man

Monday Morning at the Hiatts

Monday after Spring Break is a little bit hard when it comes to getting back into normal routines and getting up in the morning, especially when we're used to sleeping in a little later. This morning, I dragged Peter out of bed and sent him to the bathroom to get ready for school. I expected to have to knock on the door a few times to remind him that the clock is ticking as he has a tendency to get distracted. But surprisingly, he got dressed fairly quickly. When he was dressed he came out and said, "Mom, I have a haiku!" "What is it?" I asked. " General Conference  is right around the corner.  I can't wait to watch!" A little while later he told me, "and there's the other haiku, too." "Which one was that?" I asked. "The one about the first presidency!" "Oh?" "Thomas S. Monson Henry B Eyring and there's Dieter F. Uchtdorf." We had packed lunches and were just about read

Note to the spider I killed this morning:

Outside, you're my friend. But if you're in my shower, You drop in, YOU DIE!

I'm sick. (Warning - possibly TMI)

First, I just feel tired. Then headache and scratchy throat. Next, snot reigns supreme. Is started a week ago, and I *thought* it was just my body not adjusting to daylight savings time very well. (see last post)  I was exhausted and dragging. By Wednesday, a dull headache had set in and my throat felt scratchy. It just went downhill from there. I spent Thursday and Friday taking it easy, laying around in bed reading or knitting. On Friday I took a three hour nap. On Saturday, I continued to lay in bed as much as possible. Steven was an angel and did the grocery shopping and errands, so I never had to leave the house. By that time my nose had started dripping, and I could feel the pressure building in my sinuses. Yesterday, I went to church. It was just a cold, right? I wasn't running a fever, the scratchiness in my throat was very minor, and the snot, though abundant, was running clear... I just wouldn't breathe on anyone. I went to choir practice, and tried not to
Daylight Savings hits Like my head on the pillow. I'm down for the count.

Understanding Why We Should Be Like Christ

Have you ever had an "Aha moment" when something you had known your entire life suddenly took a deeper, clearer meaning? Maybe it isn't even one moment. Sometimes it kind of creeps along and you feel like you're grasping at straws for a little while, knowing there is something there, but being unable to catch onto it, and then suddenly you look at it and realize that it's what you knew all along, but now it makes total sense. It's kind of like putting together a puzzle, and I have the picture on the box, but as I discover and reach for each piece and figure out how it fits it in with the other pieces, I come to realize why each piece fits where and how it does, and the completed picture has a deeper significance. I've been having one of those grasping moments for the last several weeks. I think it started a couple months ago when I gave a lesson in Relief Society about charity , and realized that charity isn't simply loving others, but it's l

Doctor Who Stuff

Image
Since discovering Doctor Who about a year and a half ago, I watched all the new episodes, as well as several of the classic episodes, and now I see references to it everywhere. I hadn't realized how very popular it really is! It wasn't just seeing people dressed as the doctor/tardis/weeping angels/whatever at the ComicCon in Salt Lake City. I've seen people wearing Doctor Who T-shirts at Sam's Club. Our local library had a Doctor Who event. Pictures and references to Doctor Who are all over the internet. Here are some fun Doctor Who images I've come across recently. (Please note, these are not my images. I don't own them. I'm including the links to where I found them to give credit where credit is due.) http://minionfactory.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-doctor-is-afoot.html https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=609320269122668&set=a.414413855279978.99986.276710412383657&type=1&theater http://blog.riptapparel.com/blog/fun-holiday-p

Peter Gets His Bear

Image
Peter adds his Bear mother's pin to my collection. The old saying is that the third time's the charm. With my third son, I finally feel like I know what I'm doing when it comes to cub scouts. With John, I sent him off to scouts each week and attended pack meetings once a month, but rarely looked through his book, or tried to do anything at home. I pretty much left everything to his den leaders. With Josh, I was a little better about finishing requirements that weren't completed at den meetings, but with both of them, we were scrambling the last week or two to finish up requirements before their birthday and they "graduated" from their den. (It's an LDS pack, so they move up on their birthday, rather than the end of the school year like other packs.) Peter and me with Cub Master Rob Mussack With Peter, I looked through his book more frequently, stayed on top of finishing requirements that needed to be done at home, and we even completed a couple r
