11-Year Scout Camp
Because Peter was so close to his eleventh birthday, he was able to accompany his dad to the multi-stake 11-year-old scout camp this year. Here is an account of camp, as described by Peter.
It started on Thursday, with a day camp at the church. They did pushups and situps, then ran a mile, then they calculated their BMI. Then they did a sit-and-reach and measured how flexible they are. Then they had donuts (because that goes perfectly with all the healthy stuff...)
Then, they did knots. After knots came lashings, and then they had sloppy joes, chips, watermelon and lemonade for lunch. Then they went to first aid scenarios. They got to see disgusting first aid pictures. Then they went to another first aid station where they made a first aid kit and slings and stuff. Last, they learned about safe hiking.
The next morning, they got up early and drove to the church with their packs. Once everyone arrived, they had breakfast burritos and orange juice or milk. After breakfast, they went to camp at Pickle Gulch.
Once they arrived, they unpacked and went to their campsite. At the campsite, most of them set up tents. After getting all set up, many went off to explore while lunch (sandwiches) was being made. After lunch, they had a flag ceremony in their camp. After that, they went to "Animal Identification" class.
Next, they went on a five mile hike. Ugggh. At least they got to go geocaching for candy.
Once they got back, they ate dinner (soft tacos) and had a closing flag ceremony.
The next day, they got to help out with a service project, cleaning out a volley ball court.
After the service project, they took down camp and got ready to leave. The campers got lunch from the youth staff instead of making their own in camp. Then they left to go home. It was a good time.
The theme of the camp was, "Who's Your Hero?" and Peter was in the Ammon patrol. At the day camp, they came up with a patrol yell that started with the batman theme, and then instead of saying batman, they said "bacon". They like bacon.
Their actual patrol yell was, "We protect sheep! We serve the king! We serve the Lord! We're Ammon. Best patrol, hands down!" (That was a pun. :) )

The rock was the "bleachers" for animal identification class. |
There were lots of bridges down by the class. They were sent down to see if they could find any proof of animals.
Peter discovered a badger hole.
Next, they made fires and learned how to chop wood, as well as tools and safety and stuff.
Next they used lashings to make a ladder to get onto the monkey bridge. One of the ladders was better than the other one because one of the rungs broke when someone tried to step on it. Peter liked the monkey bridge - not only crossing it, but also making the ladder.Next, they went on a five mile hike. Ugggh. At least they got to go geocaching for candy.
