Another Crazy Weekend

This past weekend was crazy busy. Here are some of the highlights!

John with his teacher, Mr. Lee
What could possibly be more fun than answering math questions? For me, several things come to mind, but John seems to enjoy it. Saturday morning, John attended the Colorado State MathCounts Competition, which was held at the Colorado School of Mines, about half an hour drive away from home. John was there from about 8:30am until about 2:00pm. He didn't finish in the top four, and so won't be going on to the national competition but he had a lot of fun and this was a great experience for him.

While Steven drove John to and from the MathCounts competition, and did the grocery shopping, the rest of the kids and I cleaned the house, and Hannah baked and decorated a couple cakes for the evening activity.

Girl's Camp is one of the most fun things that the young women in our ward look forward to every year, but it isn't cheap! Every couple years, the young women in our ward host a spaghetti dinner fund raiser to raise money for Girls Camp and the other activities they do that cost money. It required a lot of work to set up everything and decorate the tables with checkered tablecloths and Italian flags set in vases filled with twizzly pasta. Hannah needed to be at the church by 3pm in order to help set up. Then she had to get to the school by 5pm to prepare for the final evening of her musical. (She had to have her hair already curled and have all her stuff so she could go straight from the church to the school.)

While Hannah was setting up at the church, I took Josh and John to the library to return last weeks books, and get a new stock to keep them in things to read.

The rest of the family arrived at the church at 6pm for dinner. There was an entrance fee ($5 per person, $25 per family of 5 or more) and we were seated at a table with another family. Salads were already on the table, and we were quickly provided with bread sticks and plates of spaghetti. The food was super! When we finished eating, we browsed the tables that contained other items that had been donated for the fund raiser. there was everything from knitted caps and a quilt to picture plaques and gift cards to various restaurants offered in a silent auction. Along another wall were tables displaying several desserts that the young women had provided. When most people had finished eating, the spoken auction began, starting with the desserts. After the desserts, other donated items and services were auctioned off - everything from babysitting to snow shoveling, weekends in resort condos to dental crowns. In all, the Young Women took in more than $2000 to fund the next couple years' activities.

We returned home from the dinner in time to relax for a few minutes before needing to pick up Hannah from the school and then we went to bed.

Sunday morning we had our usual three hours of church meetings from 9am to noon, and then we came home for lunch. Hannah had a Young Women Presidency Meeting, and we prepared dinner (lasagna and rolls) and then took it to the church at 4pm so I could attend choir practice and Steven could attend a Cub Scout Committee meeting. (The boys played in the gym and Hannah read a book.) These meetings ended a little after 5pm, and then we all joined with another family at the outside picnic tables for a quick picnic dinner before we needed to be back inside for a baptism at 6pm, for which I was playing the piano. Following the baptism (at 7pm), Steven and I had a meeting where they were planning an upcoming senior primary boys' day camp for this summer (to replace the cub scout day camp that the boys have always attended in the past.) The two of us snuck out of that meeting at 8:30 since we were both falling asleep. We took the kids (who were bored out of their minds by that point) home and we all went to bed.

I'm glad that most of our weekends are usually calmer than this one was. It felt like I was constantly watching the clock to make sure that everyone got where they needed to be at the right time. There didn't seem to be a moment for relaxing, and it was a relief to be back to normal routines today!
