Dishwasher Debate

Last night for FHE we went looking at dishwashers. The one we have is begging to retire. One wheel on the bottom rack has been missing since we moved in. (six years ago.) That I could deal with. More recently something in the door broke so unless we prop a chair or something against the door, it won't run. (And if anything, like a cat, brushes against the chair and moves it slightly, the dishwasher will stop.) Just in the last week one of the supports for the top rack broke so one corner is no longer supported and kind of drags. I feel sorry for the poor thing.

So, last night we went for a field trip and looked at dishwashers at Lowe's, Best Buy and Home Depot. There were white ones, yellowish ones, black ones and stainless steel ones. There were buttons on the front and buttons on the top of the door. Some had digital displays. There were silverware trays in the door and on the side and in the middle of the bottom rack. There were tall ones with deep racks, and shorter ones with flaps to keep things on the top rack from flipping over. Some had adjustable tines, some had bent tines, some had short tines, some had long tines. Each one had a label that proclaimed the benefits of buying that model: holds 12 or 14 or even 16 place settings! This one is only 60 or 56 decibels! This one is Energy Star Qualified! This one has four or six cycles and six or eight options, including super scrubbing, extra sanitizing, gentle crystal and china, and extra rinse or quick rinse cycles. This one has 6 spray levels! This one includes its own self cleaning filter or garbage disposal! The choices were all kind of overwhelming.

The challenge is finding a dishwasher that has all the features that we need and want, at a price we can afford. I'd like a tall one that can fit a lot in. I'd like something to keep the cups from flipping over. I'd like a dishwasher that is quieter than the one we have now, although it doesn't have to be silent. I'd like one that gets dishes clean without having to prewash them. I like the silverware trays in the door, but it would be okay if it were along a side. The one we have now takes a big chunk of space out of the middle of the bottom rack, and that is annoying.

We're leaning towards a Whirlpool dishwasher from Best Buy. It appears to have the features we need, and it is on sale. They'll install it and haul away our old one. I'll let you know how that works out.

  1. Glad you are all feeling better, sorry to hear about the dishwasher deliema. That's not a fun thing to have to do. We got a Bosch and loved it, it was quiet and didn't have the annoying thingy in the middle. Good luck!

  2. Good luck. We have had good success with Kenmore from Sears. We got one at our condo, my mother's condo and there is one here at our new home. I also know that Kathy has one as well and loves it. No prewashing, very quiet and even takes off caked on oatmeal no problem. Another $ saving idea is to get one used from Criags List. We did that for my mothers condo. Many people are upgrading to stainless steel and sell their perfectly good white appliances for a good deal. Just and idea. Happy hunting :)
